Racing across Texas, trying to stay ahead of the storms

Woke up in Arkansas to the sounds of birds chirping their asses off. We spent the previous night in a hotel room outside of Fort Worth, TX. The hotel bed wasn’t nearly as cozy as our happy camper — but we were sheltering from the threat of tornadoes and flash flooding. It’s true, everything in Texas is extra big.

Swollen Cedar Creek at Will Hair Park, Abilene, TX

As we raced across Texas, a sleepless night at a Love’s travel center in 60 mph winds didn’t sound fun. Even with the storms chasing us, we managed to play a short round of disc golf at Will Hair park in Abilene. High waters were just receding from the last storm front. A few of the park roads had been overtaken by the swollen Cedar Creek river. The course was empty of golfers but people played basketball and walked their dogs. A family was wading down a flooded road catching fish in nets and a home depot bucket. They didn’t seem concerned. We found a perch and several minnows fresh as could be on the path from hole five to six which is several yards away from the expanding river.

Today we are in Hot Springs, AK today, ready to explore Hot Springs national park and to throw a round at The Wildcat. The course is located within a mixed-use park called Cedar Glades. It’s all brilliant greens here in Arkansas made more striking compared to our previous weeks in the desert.

Heather navigating the camper

We are getting quicker setting up and taking down the H.C. We have printed checklists we read through each time, and Jon is super good at lining up the truck on the first try. Living in such a tiny space (100 sq. ft) can feel just right with time. As I watched the amount of water used to flush the toilet at our hotel, I couldn’t help feel like the amount of water used was ridiculously excessive compared with our Thetford. The hotel tv was too bright and loud, and even with two queen beds our family of humans had furry huskies piled into the same bed.

Stay tuned for our adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains.
